Barry always seemed to have a keen confidence about himself. He moved through life as if he had an intimate relationship with every moment and place. Simply being with him inspired a sense of personal cosmic significance. It was as if a sign hung over his head that read, "I am here."
ReplyDeleteI always wondered about how Barry could be so certain no matter where he was. But of course, I dare not ask, for fear of losing his favor. So I was simply content with being his friend.
It was spring of our senior year and we were on a class trip to New York City. Barry had become bored with following the group from site to site. It didn't take him long to convince me that there was more adventure to be had on our own and soon we were well separated from the rest of our class. As we were standing on a street corner, a man came up and asked us if we knew how to get to O'Flannery's. Barry smiled and said, "Sure". Reaching in his wallet he pulled out an old business card that he'd picked up someplace and began to draw a map on the back showing blocks to travel and turns to make. The man thanked us and hurred off. As he did the words just sprang from my lips before I could restrain them. "Wow, how do you know your way around so well?" He looked at me with that same sure smile and said, "I have no idea where my directions will take him. I just removed his doubt and he was off. We'll never see that man again anyway. So what difference does it make." I stared at him in stunned silence and he smiled as if to reassure me. Then he turned and began to walk off.
"How do I get back to the rest of the class", I asked. He stopped for a moment, turned and said, "Come here and I'll draw you a map".
